Intelligence

The benchmark of what businesses actually pay.

The Sondara Index & the Soundings.

Sondara maintains the benchmark; every Sounding applies it. Each reading we take deepens a proprietary benchmark of the economics of businesses, by field — and everything we can stand behind, we publish.

The Sondara Index

What the best-run practices actually pay.

A continuously updated benchmark of practice payment economics, by field — built from anonymized, aggregated soundings plus public sources, with a transparent, published methodology. It is how a Sounding tells you not just your number, but your position.

We publish the Index as a flagship only when the data is unimpeachable. Until then, every sounding quietly sharpens it.

Soundings

Published readings — real numbers, with the work shown.

A sounding is a verified finding. Below are real, anonymized patterns from merchant statements — cross-industry and illustrative of how the structures work, not a promise of your result.

Latest Sounding — “No statement shows your real rate”: what we found reading sixteen real statements →

Same card acceptance
~2× the cost
A tiered “discount” billed about 5.4% where a clean cost-plus account ran about 2.5%.
The double-charge
No single rate
A percentage “discount” plus separate card-brand fees — so no one true rate sits on the page.
Length is opacity
2 vs 92 pages
The clearest statement we read was two pages; the most opaque ran ninety-two.
Small tickets pay most
~1.5% from $0.25
A flat per-item fee quietly adds about 1.5% on a $17 average ticket.

Methodology

The Index is built from real Soundings — names stripped out, numbers combined — plus public data. We show our work: where each number comes from, and how confident we are in it. And we never publish a number we can’t back up. The whole point of Sondara is being right, so we don’t guess.

Your name and your numbers stay private — always. We treat what you share like it matters, because it does.

The Sondara Brief

One benchmark, one practical tip, one piece of analysis — occasionally. No selling.
